The US said Friday that it supported its ally Israel’s right to protection following deadly attacks. And rocket fire from Lebanon that prompted Israeli attacks.

“It is unconscionable to target innocent civilians of any nationality.”

“The United States supports the government of Israel. Its people,” said Department of State spokesman Vedant Patel in a statement.

The US also expressed support for Israel over Lebanon, though it wasn’t explicitly backing the Jewish state’s hits on its northern neighbor in reaction to militant rocket fire.

“While we urge all parties to de-escalate, we recognize Israel’s inherent right to self-defense,” said another State Department spokesperson.

“Using Lebanon as a base of operations for rocket attacks toward Israel only endangers Lebanon and raises the prospect of further conflict,” he said.

Killed and injured in a shooting
