Geomagnetic storm warning ! Check the impact of a massive, unexpected ‘G4’ storm on Earth
- The Earth has been hit hard by the most powerful geomagnetic storm in nearly six years. The massive solar storm had an unexpected magnitude of G4, exceeding the prediction formed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States in its alert.

The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) of NOAA had previously predicted mild G2, G3 geomagnetic storm conditions by the end of the week (March 23-25). The resulting storm, however, astounded space weathermen with its ferocity. As a result, the NOAA updated its alert for the G4 geomagnetic storm.
“Geomagnetic storm responses increased, and ‘G4 levels first arrived on Earth on March 24 at 12.04 EDT,” according to the NOAA warning. “CME influences continue, and the geomagnetic response reached G4 (severe) storm status on March 24 at 12:04 a.m. EDT (24/0404 UTC). The G3 Warning is still in influence until 5:00 a.m. EDT (24:00 UTC) “It went on to say.”

What do Geomagnetic storms cause ?
According to NOAA, G4 geomagnetic storms are severe and can disrupt power grids, leading to widespread voltage control issues. They can also impede spacecraft operations by increasing the possibility of surface charging and the danger of atmospheric drag on Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellites. It can also have an impact on the Earth’s magnetic field, causing severe disruptions.
Geomagnetic storm warning
The G4 storm was caused by a “stealth” CME. CMEs, or coronal mass ejections, are large solar material expulsions from the Sun’s upper atmosphere, or corona. The responsible CME was ejected from a coronal hole the size of 20 Earths. It released solar winds at speeds of over 2.1 million kilometres per hour.

The most powerful geomagnetic storm in six years caused auroras across the United States, as far south as New Mexico. Rocket Lab’s launch was forced to be postponed by 90 minutes. Scientists predict that similar and more extreme events will occur when the sun reaches the highest point of its 11-year solar activity cycle in 2025.
