Nicholas Hoult of Renfield explains how it’s a new take on Dracula
- “It’s difficult to see someone in pain and hurt like that, even if you have a difficult relationship.”

Renfield star Nicholas Hoult has spoken out about the new comedy-horror’s distinctive take on Dracula.
Nicolas Cage (who just starred in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent) plays the fearsome Determine and his character’s master opposes him. And his version of Bram Stoker’s monster begins the film wilted and convalescing.
Both Hoult and Cage addressed this surprising choice in a private conversation with Digital Spy. With the latter one saying, “Well, I think there is an attraction to the grotesque.” I believe we called that first look “the Picasso look,” but I’d say it’s the most awful I’ve ever seen.”
“You’re being too harsh on yourself with your little eyeball,” Hoult, most recently seen in The Menu, told his co-star.
“As an actor, I know how difficult prosthetic, large make-ups like that are to put on. So I was astonish by how patient and kind you were throughout the process.” Christien Tinsley’s make-up gazed incredibly.
“From a character standpoint, Renfield cares about Dracula and desires to nurse him back to health. And it’s difficult to see someone in pain and hurt like that. Even if you have a relationship that’s complicate, so he’s nourishing and wants to take care of him,” says the author.
In response, Cage stated that Renfield’s compassion heralds a “new take.”

In January, the Face/Off actor showed that he studied Frank Langella’s 1979 version of the Transylvanian terror. As well as Gary Oldman’s “sumptuous” 1992 effort as preparation.
“What makes it extremely enjoyable is that it’s a comedy,” Renfield added. “And when you receive that tone right – humor and horror – it’s a blast, like An American Werewolf in London.”
