  • Ayurvedic teachings cannot be reduced to simple, restrictive points. The teachings ethos is about how complex, subtle, and our bodies are—and thus how we care for them is, in the end, equally intricate. This is also true for Ayurvedic skin care.

“There are well-known one-size-fits-all ingredients in the West. Ayurveda focuses on discovering what works best for you. Ayurveda is an intensely personal science that honors your distinctiveness.” Shrankhla Holecek, the founder of Uma Oils, is an Ayurvedic beauty expert. In this episode of Clean Beauty School, we discuss Holecek’s journey. Herbal beauty belief systems, and how to balance doshas with daily skin care habits.

And, while we do offer a lot of advice, it’s not possible to address everything. Here’s a taste of what we talked about: her new favorite facial oils. Make sure to watch the episode to find out more.

Grapeseed

Choosing an appropriate oil that can help counter the skin is difficult for those suffering from acne (who may have Kapha imbalances). Holecek, on the opposite hand, adores grapeseed oil.

“Grapeseed oil is high in omegas, particularly linoleic acid. According to studies, those with pimple skin do not produce enough linoleic acid1, which breaks up the continuity of sebum” she claims. “As a result, their sebum is naturally thicker. As a result, it traps more dirt and skin accumulation, eventually leading to acne.”

Pomegranate oil

While Ayurveda is all about customization, some skin care additives are more widely considered acceptable than others. Pomegranate oil is one such example.

“It’s a great all-purpose skin care oil,” she says. It’s especially beneficial for people who have delicate skin. However, pomegranate oil is well considered acceptable by all skin types. It is an oil that can aid in the repair and ability to heal of aggregated skin.”

nutrients that is rich Rosehip oil in support mature skin and can help with fine lines, sagging, and other age-related issues. “It’s great for signs of aging, like skin thinness, dry skin, and so on,” she says, mentioning that it is technologically more comedogenic. “It’s better for Vata skin types as it’s not as likely to cause breakouts.”

Jojoba oil

This popular oil is frequently used because it closely resembles our skin’s natural sebum, according to Holecek. “I love jojoba oil because it mimics the skin’s feel. So it really revitalizes the skin and makes it more accepting,” she says. “It also does not cause overproduction of oil if you are Vata.”

Avocado

While it is not a common suggestion for Holecek, she recommends it. For those who have skin conditions that cause dryness and disruption of the skin’s barrier. The most notable example is eczema. “I love avocado oil in very particular situations, such as if you have eczema. That is an oil that can assist you” she claims.
